Postnatal massage: Support for new parents

May 31, 2026 Alice Mould

Postnatal massage is a great way of supporting the body and mind of new mothers, during the period of recovery after childbirth. Whether during the first weeks, a few months in, or even while caring for a toddler, this period brings many ongoing changes and can be as complex to navigate as the pregnancy itself.

When booking a massage after giving birth, it can be helpful to mention this to your therapist so that the treatment can be tailored to you. Ultimately, it’s about creating a supportive space to rest, reset, and feel looked after.

Physical changes

After giving birth, the body begins adapting to a new set of movements and demands. While lower back pain is a commonplace during pregnancy, the postnatal phase involves a lot of feeding, holding, lifting, and carrying which presents a different set of repetitive strains on the body. It’s very usual to experience tension in the neck and shoulders from feeding and looking down, as well as in the upper back from having a rounded posture while cradling. The hips may also feel strained from lifting in and out of cots, while arms and wrists can become fatigued from holding a baby carrier or pushing prams for extended periods of time.

Massage can help to ease muscular tension, and support recovery from these new physical patterns. Treatments are always responsive to how your body feels on the day, rather than following a fixed routine.

Hormonal changes

The body continues to go through significant hormonal changes during recovery after childbirth, which can affect energy levels, mood, and even joint stability. Levels of oestrogen and progesterone drop rapidly, and it’s not unusual to feel more physically sensitive or more aware of fatigue during this time.

Memory lapses and fogginess are sometimes a cause of stress, so postnatal massage can offer a calming, regulating effect on the nervous system, helping you feel more grounded during a period of transition.

Emotional wellbeing and body awareness

Alongside physical recovery, the postnatal period can bring a noticeable shift in identity. Life can feel overfull and demanding, with days often centred entirely around the baby, with little time to check in on how you’re feeling. There can also be a sense that your body feels different from before, and without making time for yourself for this feeling to settle, this sense can become a source of confusion or anxiety.

One of massage’s strongest benefits is simply giving yourself a quiet, uninterrupted space to reconnect with your body and yourself. Whether you’ve recently given birth or not, this is true, and treatments are always approached with clear communication and care.

During the session, we’ll use supportive body positioning such as cushions or side-lying where needed, and always with full respect for your comfort. The focus is not on “fixing” anything, but on helping you feel supported and at ease.

Postnatal sleep and rest

Let’s face it, looking after a newborn can be really really tiring! Sleep in the postnatal period is often fragmented and unpredictable, especially when your child is likely to wake up several times during the night. Inconsistent sleep can lead to cumulative fatigue, and over time, this can make it harder for the body to fully relax and can lead to feeling low and irritable.

Postnatal massage encourages activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, sometimes referred to as the “rest and digest” state. This can support the body in shifting out of a more alert stressed mode, by easing areas of tension such as the neck, shoulders, and lower back, or stimulating the vagus nerve which is directly connected with the parasympathetic nervous system.

While it may not increase the number of hours you sleep, many people find that the quality of rest improves, and that they are able to settle more easily.

Final thoughts

Available at any stage of recovery after childbirth, postnatal massage is a flexible and supportive treatment that can bring great relief and support to new mothers. It can also be a meaningful and practical gift for someone you know who has recently had a baby, particularly if a partner, friend, or family member can look after the baby for a short time. It offers something that is often in short supply — time to rest, reset, and feel personally cared for.

To assess whether it’s right for you, you’re always welcome to get in touch with me or book a session, and we can tailor it together.
