Massage for Young People with Additional Needs and Neurodivergence

November 26, 2025 Alice Mould

Understanding neurodiversity and massage

Neurodiversity is an increasingly widespread terminology that refers to the cognitive differences between how people think, learn and behave. It holds that there is no single, ‘right’ way for a brain to function, and this perspective challenges traditional conventions that often pathologise these differences; instead promoting acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation of diverse cognitive styles.

It invites us to think differently. Instead of trying to figure out how a neurodiverse person might fit into our system, we are beginning to think more and more about how to adapt our systems to better include and support this person.

For many young people who are neurodiverse, including those on the autism spectrum or with other additional needs, the world can sometimes feel overwhelming: lights, sounds, textures, and social expectations all demand extra energy and focus.

Young people such as these can benefit deeply from supportive, sensory-based therapies such as massage, which offers a way to help the body and mind rest. A calm, predictable space can help someone reconnect with a sense of safety in their own body.

How massage can support young people

For many children and teenagers with autism or other additional needs, life in a world not designed around their sensitivities can be tiring. As recognised by a number of research-driven healthcare organisations, regular relaxation and supportive touch can ease anxiety and help regulate sensory experiences.

Held pressure is particularly beneficial. It helps the nervous system settle and can encourage a feeling of safety in the body. Additionally, deep relaxation and therapeutic touch is shown to be helpful for managing stress and promoting sleep, both of which are vital for overall health, and apply to people of all ages. This can be useful in a variety of contexts, including things like exam stress and other day-to-day challenges.

These benefits extend beyond the treatment room. Many young clients show improvements in self-esteem, focus, and the ability to better regulate emotions.

Creating a safe, compassionate, and individual experience

Each person’s experience of life is unique. That’s why every session is tailored with care, curiosity, and flexibility. For young people under 18, a parent or carer remains in the room throughout the session, often listening to music or reading to maintain both comfort and privacy. Sessions are always young person-led, and I talk to them directly, rather than through their parent.

Before the treatment begins, I explain what to expect in clear, simple language, checking that everything feels comfortable. Some young people may be having their very first massage, so establishing safe touch, boundaries, and a sense of agency is key. We regularly pause, review, and adjust the approach together, and this helps the client feel involved and heard throughout the process.

My approach

Working with young clients means being attuned and adaptable. My approach is rooted in compassion and understanding, informed by a specialist course in supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), which I completed in 2024. I take time to listen to each young person and their parents to find out which approach feels most supportive, and I always aim to work without assumptions and with curiosity.

In the massage appointment, each session evolves in response to the individual’s requirements that day. After each session, we talk about what worked well, what could be refined, and any changes that might help next time. This collaborative, responsive approach allows for trust and genuine connection to build over time.

Supporting wellbeing in Bristol

For me, massage for young people with additional needs is about offering recognition, respect, and a secure space to experience deep rest.

At my Southville practice in Bristol, I aim to create a supportive environment that can help neurodiverse young people feel more comfortable and confident within themselves. For many, it is also their first introduction to the world of massage, so I aim to create an experience that is gentle and welcoming. Additionally, everyone has their own preferred language, and it’s always evolving. If there’s a way you’d like me to refer to you or your young person, just let me know. I’m happy to use whatever feels best for you.

If you’d like to learn more about how holistic massage can support a young person with additional needs, then please feel welcome to get in touch to discuss what might work for them.
